This chapter provides an introduction to risk analysis, its purpose, main elements and its use to support decision making. Different categories of risk analyses are presented, simplified, standard and model‐based risk analyses. An overview of the basic features of risk management is included as well as a model for decision making under uncertainty. The cautionary and precautionary principles are also covered. Several examples are presented to highlight important issues to be further discussed in coming chapters.
