This chapter describes the development of cognitive‐behavioral therapy (CBT) for eating disorders (EDs) such as bulimia nervosa (BN), binge eating disorder (BED), and anorexia nervosa (AN). It also describes the development of transdiagnostic, enhanced CBT for EDs. The evidence base for their effectiveness is also presented. In general, CBT for EDs follows the principles laid down by the early proponents of CBT for depression. Treatment is structured and time‐limited, with an agenda set at the start of each session. The chapter presents an overview of the CBT‐BN protocol, then describes each stage of the original protocol, and highlights the ways in which it has been adapted for use with BED, AN, and a transdiagnostic sample. It focuses on the present and future rather than on the past, and on the factors and processes that are maintaining the disorder.
