Anxiety is a normal emotional response to imminent or perceived threat and is characterized by fear and worry. The core symptoms of anxiety are fear and worry. Social anxiety disorder is a social phobia characterized by excessive fear (or anxiety) about certain social situations or being observed engaging in certain activities, in which the afflicted person may be subject to potential scrutiny by others. The main anxiety disorders include generalized anxiety, panic attack, panic disorder, social anxiety disorder (characterized by excessive fear and worry about being exposed to the scrutiny of other people), agoraphobia (characterized by fear and panic that are associated with situations or places) and specific phobias (characterized by anxiety about specific objects). Anxiety disorders are ideally treated by a combination of pharmacotherapy and psychosocial treatments. The outcomes of pharmacological and nonpharmacological treatments in the management of anxiety disorders are variable and depend of the type of disorder.
