Army ants are keystone predators in the tropics and subtropics. During reproduction, males fly between colonies to mate with unmated, wingless queens. The males of most species are attracted to lights, and thus their presence and the timing of reproduction can be monitored using light traps. Previous studies examined the seasonality of army ant male reproduction and its relationship to climate factors...
Two distinct diversity patterns are observed along tropical elevations: (a) decreasing number of species toward high elevations and (b) a hump‐shaped pattern with the peak at mid‐elevations. As diversity is likely supported by ecological capacity of the environment, decomposition of the overall richness into ecological facets and considering number of individuals within them is crucial for the proper...
We measured the thermoregulatory characteristics of a common, tropical murid rodent, Sundamys muelleri. Subcutaneous body temperatures and evaporative water loss increased at ambient temperatures above 33°C, but no increases in metabolic rate were observed as high as 38.2°C, indicating tropical rodents may be resilient as climate change progresses.
