Este estudio investiga si es posible simplificar la compleja influencia de varias especies en la descomposición de hojarasca foliar en bosques tropicales utilizando una clasificación funcional que predice la calidad de la hojarasca, la tasa de descomposición, y la dinámica de nutrientes durante la descomposición, durante un periodo de dos años. Treinta y tres especies de plantas de bosque bajo tropical con formas de crecimientos contrastantes (árboles de dosel, árboles pioneros, lianas, palmas y hierbas) fueron estudiadas. Doce de diecisiete índices de calidad de hojarasca variaron significativamente entre formas de crecimientos, con árboles del dosel y palmas mostrando la menor calidad de hojarasca comparados con árboles pioneros y hierbas. Las hojas del dosel se descomponen más lentamente que las hojas del sotobosque. La tasa de descomposición y la pérdida de masa fue marginalmente mayor (P < 0.1) en hierbas y árboles pioneros comparados con otras formas de vida. No hubo diferencias significativas entre monocotiledóneas y dicotiledóneas, y no se observó una señal filogénetica asociada a la descomposición. Las correlaciones entre las variables continuas de calidad de la hojarasca y la tasa de descomposición también mostraron poder predictivo con coeficientes de correlación de hasta 0.72. La relación Lignina:Mg de hojarasca, concentración de P, y relación lignina:K, fueron las variables de calidad de hojarasca más relacionadas con la tasa de descomposición. Todos los elementos mostraron correlaciones negativas significativas entre concentración inicial de hojarasca y porcentaje restante, pero varios elementos mostraron correlaciones significativas entre el porcentaje de elemento restante, y la concentración inicial de otros elementos, lo cual indica un balance estequiométrico entre elementos durante la descomposición. Los resultados muestran que a pesar de que la clasificación por formas de crecimientos y posición del dosel son útiles, ya que consideran implicaciones para los ecosistemas en términos de cambios de composición de comunidad, los rasgos de calidad de hojarasca proveen un poder predictivo adicional para estimar los efectos de cambios de especies en la descomposición.
