AI‐based generation of 3‐D digtal twins of existing bridges
A 3‐D digital twin is commonly understood to be a virtual image of a physical element. Such virtual images can appear in various forms with very different characteristics and areas of application – and at very different prices. However, the high cost of creating 3‐D models of as‐built bridges and the lack of integration hinder the widespread adoption of a promising technology for monitoring and managing as‐built bridges. The report explains how an evolution of gaming technology and the use of AI significantly reduces the cost and barriers to creating digital twins, creating a scalable solution for many application areas. In order for the 3‐D digital twins to unfold the desired added value, the integration of the respective systems is of decisive importance in addition to simple handling. Aspects such as cloud, IoT and ERP connection, questions of connectivity as well as security and privacy are central elements of a successful integration of 3‐D digital dwins into an existing data and IT ecosystem.
