CO2‐Reduction in the built environment – from strategic guidelines until planning and implementation
The paper highlights approaches, strategies and instruments for CO2 reduction in the built environment. The authors examine the early integration of CO2 reduction aspects at stage 0 or at concept stage, during which the objective of a project is being determined. At this stage, decisive guidelines for the reduction of embodied and operational emissions can be formulated, which have a significant influence on the tendering process and implementation of a project. It is also explained how the achievement of CO2 targets can be supported and guaranteed throughout further stages. With CO2 being embodied in the construction mass, the particular focus is on the calculation of the Global Warming Potential (GWP) of load bearing structures. It is discussed at what stage such calculations and considerations are meaningful, in order to make a contribution to the CO2 reduction. Based on an office building currently under construction, structural concepts are compared regarding their life cycle assessment. The construction industry is responsible for about 40 % of global CO2 emissions. Engineers have the responsibility and possibilities to influence this value significantly. As an international, integrated engineering consultancy, Buro Happold can draw on interdisciplinary expertise that allows us to accompany projects from the initial idea to implementation. Thus, the greatest possible positive impact in terms of sustainability and carbon footprint can be achieved. The authors with their background in structural engineering and sustainability consulting demonstrate the potential of this integrated approach.
