Experimente mit selektiver 15N‐Markierung bestätigen den nucleophilen Angriff von Azid auf Iminium‐aktivierte, organische Azide, der zu kurzlebigen Hexazenintermediaten führt. Solche Spezies neigen nicht nur zu einer Spaltungsreaktion unter Erzeugung von N‐Azidoverbindungen, sondern gehen auch einen Ringschluss unter Bildung beispielloser Amidino‐funktionalisierter Pentazole ein. Daher liefert die Einwirkung von zwei Äquivalenten an Natriumazid auf die Stammverbindung der Vilsmeier‐Reagenzien ein Aminopentazolderivat als Hauptprodukt, das leicht mithilfe der NMR‐Spektroskopie zu charakterisieren ist.
