This chapter presents information on sources and kinds of data collected on male‐on‐female intimate partner violence (IPV), descriptions of male partner‐abusers, consequences of IPV, and possible treatment implications. It addresses the financial costs to American society in terms of welfare, medical expenses, and the criminal justice system. Research conducted on men who abuse their women has determined a moderate degree of consistency with abusers typologies, although many researchers suggest that distinct abuser categories are artificial. For many victims of physical violence, the negative psychological aftermath remains for a lifetime and has ill effects on future relationships, particular for those experiencing the most severe abuse. PTSD and CPTSD, although treatable, leave an indelible mark on abuse victims. The chapter also presents examples to illustrate the emotionally volatile wife abuser and the psychopathic wife abuser.
