This chapter reviews the treatment process for child maltreatment (CM) and addresses issues related to assessment, diagnosis (especially for PTSD), and individual and family interventions. Particular emphasis is placed on phase‐based treatments that typically include the following phases: stabilizing the client, processing the traumatic experience, cognitive processing, and consolidating learning and enhancing resiliency. Current evidence‐based interventions to treat CM and traumatized children have been adapted from models used to treat abused and traumatized adults. The chapter discusses the evidenced‐based treatments for CM for children who meet partial or full criteria for PTSD. Comparison studies support CBT models that include parent/family‐based components over nonbehavioral ones. The goal of treatment is to reduce child abuse and neglect, family conflict, and severe child behavior problems through teaching parents and family members conflict‐resolution and relationship‐building skills.
