Summary
Pneumatosis intestinalis (PI) is commonly observed in neonates with necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC). In NEC the distal part of the small intestine and proximal part of the colon are most often affected. PI of the stomach (pneumatosis ventriculi) is a rare phenomenon and usually a sign of fulminant NEC. Pneumatosis ventriculi can also be observed secondarily to gastric outlet obstruction usually requiring surgical intervention. We describe a preterm infant with pneumatosis isolated to the stomach without gastro-intestinal obstruction or a fulminant NEC. The outcome was good and quite different than described in the literature.
