Palliativmedizin und Hospiz sind dem Leben verpflichtet und lehnen eine aktive Sterbehilfe ab. Folgende Kernpunkte liegen zugrunde: Im Sterben nicht alleine gelassen zu werden, sondern an einem vertrauten Ort unter Teilnahme vertrauter Menschen zu sterben. Im Sterben nicht unter körperlichen Beschwerden und Schmerzen leiden zu müssen und schließlich über spirituelle Sinnfragen sprechen zu können. Zum Erhalt von Würde und Autonomie sollten auch gynäkologisch-onkologische Akutkliniken ein Palliativkonzept bereithalten. Der Anästhesiologe kann hier durch sein fachspezifisches Know-how, eingebunden in ein multiprofessionelles Team, wesentliche Beiträge leisten. Unter Einbeziehung des familiären Umfeldes brauchen sterbende Kinder eine speziell auf sie abgestimmte ärztliche, pflegerische, psychologische und spirituelle Begleitung in einer kindgerechten Umgebung. Stationäre Angebote im Sinne von Palliativstationen zur Krisenintervention sind für Kinder genauso unverzichtbar wie für Erwachsene. Die Versorgung in einem Kinderhospiz bedeutet in der Situation langfristig kranker Kinder eine Entlastung für die Eltern und auch für die Geschwister.
