The Republic of the Philippines has two national radiation regulatory authorities. One is the Philippine Nuclear Research Institute (PNRI) of the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) and the other is the Bureau of Health Devices and Technology (BHDT) of the Department of Health (DOH). PNRI is the regulatory agency for radioactive materials while BHDT is the regulatory agency for electrical/electronic devices emitting ionizing and non-ionizing radiation.
Both agencies have had and continue to have an important role in the education and training of medical physicists in the country.
They have been instrumental in the establishment of the masteral degree program in medical physics. They have supported training courses and scientific meetings in medical physics, cooperated with relevant professional organizations, awarded scholarship grants, provided research funds, and been involved in international projects which pertain to medical physics. These different strategies are discussed in this paper.
