Access to body cavities may be gained with a closed technique using a Veress needle or with an open technique. This chapter deals with an assortment of ports that are used for access to the body cavity, umbilical access sites for the safe introduction of ports for laparoscopic procedures, injuries that may be encountered and issues with port removal after completion of a procedure. The technique for the insertion of the Veress needle and its safe placement has been explained. Also, the open access technique with step-by-step dissection through the tissues has been outlined.
