Die Hauptaufgabe des Augenarztes bei der interdisziplinären Schwindelabklärung liegt in der Untersuchung der Augenbewegungen und dem Ausschluss zentraler Augenbewegungsstörungen. Weitere neuroophthalmologische Untersuchungen (Pupillenreaktionen, Papille) können unspezifische, aber hilfreiche Befunde liefern. Zudem kann der Augenarzt bei bestimmten disziplinübergreifenden Erkrankungen (z. B. Cogan I, Vogt-Koyanagi-Harada-Syndrom, Morbus Behçet) wegweisende Augenveränderungen erkennen. Okuläre Veränderungen verursachen keinen Schwindel im engeren Sinne (Vertigo), aber eine Vielzahl diffuserer Beschwerden, die von manchen Patienten als Schwindel bezeichnet werden.
