Diabetes commonly affects every part of the gastrointestinal tract from the esophagus to the rectum. It has been estimated that more than 75% of diabetics may have gastrointestinal symptoms directly related to the effects of diabetic neuropathy. Some gastrointestinal symptoms may be under-reported by diabetic patients and physicians because they appear minor compared to retinopathy, nephropathy and other complications of diabetes. Some patients may be asymptomatic but still have an underlying disorder of gastrointestinal function.
