Hintergrund
Frauen wiegen durchschnittlich weniger als Männer, sind kleiner und weniger muskulös als diese. Da bei Manipulationen an der Wirbelsäule der maximal aufzubringende Kraftimpuls hoch sein kann und in sehr kurzer Zeit erzielt werden muss, stellt sich die Frage nach den physischen Voraussetzungen von Frauen, solch große Kräfte aufbringen zu können. Ziel der vorliegenden Untersuchung war der Vergleich des Kraftaufwands von weiblichen und männlichen Manualmedizinern während Manipulationen an der Brustwirbelsäule.
Methoden
In der Studie wurden 14 männliche und 14 weibliche Manualmediziner mit jeweils vergleichbarer Berufserfahrung gegenübergestellt. Jeder von ihnen führte manualtherapeutische Manipulationen bei einem von neun erwachsenen asymptomatischen Männern an, deren Körpergröße und Gewicht ähnlich waren. Die Mediziner sollten einen Processus transversus um den 4. und den 9. Brustwirbel mit manipulativem Impuls behandeln. Jede Technik war erlaubt, solange der Impuls in posterior-anteriorer Richtung erfolgte und die ausführende Hand auf einem Drucksensor (Fläche 100 cm2) Kontakt hatte.
Ergebnisse
Zwischen den männlichen und den weiblichen Manualtherapeuten fand sich kein signifikanter Unterschied bei den Messungen an der oberen Brustwirbelsäule ( p <0,05). Bei den Manipulationen an der unteren Brustwirbelsäule war die Vorspannung bei den Männern signifikant größer (p<0,05) als bei den weiblichen Chirotherapeuten. Für die weiteren Messparameter fanden sich keine Unterschiede zwischen den beiden Gruppen.
Schlussfolgerung
Hieraus lässt sich schlussfolgern, dass weibliche Manualtherapeuten in Hinblick auf die Mechanik vergleichbar arbeiten wie ihre männlichen Kollegen.
