Ökonomisches Denken gehört zu einer ethisch vertretbaren Medizin unabdingbar dazu, da ansonsten wertvolle Ressourcen verschwendet würden. Allerdings ist zu beachten, dass das rein ökonomische Denken allein auf die Maximierung des Nutzens fokussiert. Demgegenüber müsste eine ethische Betrachtungsweise die Nutzenmaximierung zwar mit einbeziehen, aber auch Felder markieren, bei denen eine Einbuße der Nutzenmaximierung zugunsten anderer Werte, wie Chancengleichheit oder Schutzpflicht den Schwachen gegenüber, in Kauf genommen werden müsste. Das Verhältnis zwischen Ethik und Ökonomie wird dann zu einer Gefahr für die Medizin, wenn das ökonomische Denken so beherrschend wird, dass die Medizin nicht mehr als eine soziale Errungenschaft, der es um den Menschen in Not geht, wiederzuerkennen ist. Daher ist es wichtig, dass das ökonomische Denken nicht zur identitätsstiftenden Denkweise der Medizin wird.
