Zur Einteilung nach der AO-CMF-Trauma-Klassifikation sind bei der Diagnostik von Unterkieferfakturen insgesamt neun anatomische Subregionen von Interesse. An drei Fallbeispielen werden die diagnostischen Möglichkeiten der digitalen Volumentomographie (DVT) bei Unterkieferfrakturen im Hinblick auf die Klassifikationskriterien in den nichtkondylären (Regionen mit Ausnahme des Gelenkfortsatzes) und kondylären Unterkiefersubregionen skizziert. Bei klinischem Frakturverdacht empfiehlt es sich, alle Schichtebenen systematisch nach sicheren Zeichen für eine Kontinuitätsunterbrechung durchzusehen. Gegenüber den konventionellen Röntgenverfahren bietet die dentale DVT mehr Einblick (multiplanar und dreidimensional) und damit Zusatzinformationen über feine, ansonsten schwer identifizierbare Frakturlinien sowie den Grad von Fragmentation und Dislokation. Störende Überlagerungseffekte entfallen, womit die Diagnostik zuverlässiger wird. Dies dient wiederum den Genauigkeitsansprüchen der Klassifikation und belegt die besondere Eignung der DVT-Bildgebung zu einer differenzierten Frakturdiagnostik im Unterkiefer im Präzisionslevel 3.
