Die leichte kognitive Beeinträchtigung und die Alzheimer-Demenz sind häufige Erkrankungen des hohen Erwachsenenalters. Die leichte kognitive Beeinträchtigung kann dabei ein klinisches Vorstadium der Alzheimer-Demenz darstellen. Umso wichtiger sind hierbei präventive Maßnahmen wie auch eine frühzeitige Diagnostik, um sekundäre Ursachen frühzeitig zu identifizieren oder auszuschließen. Die Prävention umfasst eine Stabilisierung des allgemeinen Gesundheitszustands unter Berücksichtigung internistischer Erkrankungen und baut auf dem Konzept der kognitiven Reserve auf. Empfehlenswert ist eine vielseitige Aktivierung – geistig, physisch und sozial, um diesen Alterserkrankungen entgegenwirken zu können. Der Fokus dieses Beitrags liegt auf der Vermittlung der klinischen Grundlagen zur Klassifikation, Diagnostik und Therapie der leichten kognitiven Beeinträchtigung und beginnenden Demenzen um Hintergrundwissen bei etwaig auftretenden Schwierigkeiten in der zahnärztlichen Behandlung dementiell Erkrankter oder von einer leichten kognitiven Beeinträchtigung Betroffener zu vermitteln.
