Diabetes and heart failure
Patients with diabetes exhibit an increased risk for the development of heart failure, and the presence of both diseases is associated with a poorer prognosis. In the case of additional comorbidities such as chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), not only is the diagnosis of heart failure hampered but also the prognosis further worsened.
Treatment
To date, treatment strategies to reduce cardiovascular morbidity and mortality in diabetes patients have mainly focussed on the prevention of coronary events. However, recent data suggest that the early diagnosis of heart failure in patients with diabetes, as well as specific treatments, may have a major impact on the prognosis of these patients.
Aim of the article
This article provides a comprehensive overview of the epidemiology, pathophysiology, and prognosis of heart failure in patients with diabetes and comorbid COPD and addresses current aspects of heart failure management in patients with diabetes as well as diabetes management in heart failure patients.
