Die meisten Speicheranlagen in Österreich liegen im Gebirge, verfügen über eher kurze Speicherlängen, die im Vergleich zu Küsten- oder Flachlandregionen nicht direkt dem Windangriff ausgesetzt sind und haben zumeist steilere Böschungsneigungen mit unterschiedlichen Deckwerken.
Um gesicherte Ansätze für die zu erwartenden Wellenauflaufhöhen bei unterschiedlich ausgebildeten Dammböschungen und vertikalen Wänden zu erhalten, wurde das Institut für Wasserbau und Ingenieurhydrologie der Technischen Universität Wien mit der Durchführung von hydraulischen Modellversuchen zu diesem Thema beauftragt. Im Rahmen des Versuchsprogramms wurden verschiedene Böschungsneigungen analysiert, deren Oberflächen glatt waren oder mit Steindeckwerken bis 1300 kg (ca. 70 cm Durchmesser) versehen wurden. Das Versuchsprogramm umfasste insgesamt fünf Wellen, die theoretisch laut Merkblatt zur Freibordbemessung an Stauanlagen des Deutschen Verbandes für Wasserwirtschaft und Kulturbau (DVWK 246/1997) bei Windgeschwindigkeiten zwischen 20 m/s und 35 m/s und Streichlängen des Windes zwischen 500 m und 3000 m erzeugt werden und die sich hinsichtlich ihrer Wellenhöhe, Wellenlänge und Periode unterscheiden.
Bei der Versuchsauswertung ergaben sich die zu erwartenden Abhängigkeiten der Wellenauflaufhöhen von der Böschungsneigung und der Ausbildung der Böschungsoberfläche in Bezug auf die Rauigkeit und Durchlässigkeit. Der Vergleich der gemessenen Auflaufhöhen mit gängigen Bemessungsformeln zeigt, dass die gemessenen Auflaufhöhen, auch aufgrund hoher statistischer Sicherheitszuschläge in den Bemessungsformeln, durchwegs niedriger als die theoretisch berechneten ausfallen. Diese Grundlagen und Erkenntnisse sollen künftig bei der Freibordbemessung von Speichern in alpinen Räumen ebenso Berücksichtigung finden wie konkrete Messungen von Wellenhöhen in Abhängigkeit von der Windgeschwindigkeit an einem Speicher.
