Tumoren der Kopf-Hals-Region sind überwiegend Plattenepithelkarzinome, die der Speicheldrüsen Adenokarzinome, adenoid-zystische Karzinome oder Mukoepidermoidkarzinome. In der Bundesrepublik lag 2011 die Inzidenz von Tumoren der Mundhöhle und des Rachens bei 6839 (5026 Männer und 1813 Frauen), die von Tumoren des Kehlkopfs bei 1878 (1642 Männer und 236 Frauen). Die Inzidenz von Tumoren der Nasenhöhle und der Nasennebenhöhlen war mit 467, die der großen Speicheldrüsen mit 470 deutlich niedriger ( www.krebsdaten.de/abfrage ). Die vordringliche Aufgabe der Bildgebung bei Kopf-Hals-Tumoren sind das Staging und die Beurteilung der Infiltrationstiefe. Diese Information ist essenziell für die Therapieentscheidung (Resektion oder Radiochemotherapie), die Planung des Resektionsausmaßes und notwendiger rekonstruktiver Maßnahmen, aber auch zur Abschätzung funktioneller Einbußen nach Therapie. Der Computertomographie (CT) und der Magnetresonanztomographie (MRT) kommt dabei eine besondere Bedeutung zu.
