In den Fachzeitschriften der Deutschen Demokratischen Republik (DDR) erschienene Artikel, Lehrbücher und Stichproben von Krankenakten belegen, dass das weite therapeutische Spektrum der Psychiatrie der 1950er und 1960er Jahre auch in der frühen DDR genutzt wurde. Die Anwendung der Insulin-Koma-Therapie, der Cardiazol- und Elektrokrampftherapie und insbesondere der Leukotomie in der DDR ist nicht nur im Kontext der internationalen Entwicklung und Debatte um diese Therapien bis zur Einführung der Psychopharmakotherapie und darüber hinaus zu sehen, sondern, ähnlich wie in der Bundesrepublik, auch in Abhängigkeit von der in den Nachkriegsjahren teils lokal unterschiedlich eingeschränkten Verfügbarkeit von Insulin oder Cardiazol, unterschiedlicher Lehrmeinungen sowie Schwerpunktsetzungen der verschiedenen Kliniken.
