In the 1990s, Josef Hummelsberger spent two months under the tutorship of Professor Shi Runjie attending lectures and assisting at Zhejiang Academy for TCM in Hangzhou. On the basis of the notes taken at this time and of his own experience gathered in the meantime, the author explains in this article the way in which Chinese Medicine is to be used in the therapy of Morbus Basedow.
First of all the author analyses the four major patterns that characterise M. Basedow: glow (ardor, huo) in the liver functional system (o. hepaticus, gan), heat (calor, re) as a result of energy deficiency (depletio, xu) of the yin and an uprising yang in the liver functional system (o. hepaticus, gan), deficiency (depletio, xu) of the qi and yin as well as phlegm (pituita, tan), obstruction of the qi and xue stasis coupled with heat (calor, re) in the liver functional system (o. hepaticus, gan). In each case the author describes the corresponding symptoms, the therapy strategy and also the recommended prescriptions and acupuncture points. Details of the approach adopted by the author are provided by a study of one of Prof. Shi’s cases and studies of two cases treated by the author.
