Dargestellt werden sonographische Untersuchungsmethoden vor Shuntanlage und zur Beurteilung der Shuntfunktion. Durch die methodische Konzentration auf Schlüsselbefunde und Algorithmen kann erreicht werden, dass Erfolgsrate und Lernkurve rasch ansteigen, überdies ist der Stellenwert sonographischer Untersuchungen vor Shuntanlage durch randomisierte Studien belegt. Die systematische Untersuchung umfasst u. a. Morphologie sowie Ruhe- und Flussprofile der A. brachialis, A. radialis und A. ulnaris sowie der V. cephalica und der V. basilica. Diskutiert werden Faktoren, welche die Wahl des Zugangs und die Lokalisation der Anastomose beeinflussen, wie postischämischer Resistance Index oder individuelle Gefäßverläufe. Besprochen wird weiterhin der Stellenwert der Doppler-Sonographie bei der Beurteilung der Shuntreifung, bei Shuntdysfunktion und beim Shunt-Monitoring. Dies führt u. a. zu weniger ungeplanten stationären Aufenthalten, selteneren temporären Katheteranlagen und weniger Notfalleingriffen.
