Diabetes dependent foot lesions are, in spite of recent developments, still a major medical problem. They often lead to amputation, invalidity, and handicap due to their chronic nature and tendency to recurrence. Long-term admission to hospital, rehabilitation measures and long periods of home care lead to enormous costs to the health care system. For example, the 3 year costs in Sweden reach $US16,000–26,700 for the primary healing of a lesion; with amputation this reaches $US43,000–63,000. With suitable interdisciplinary management, it is possible to reduce these costs very substantially while saving the patient a great deal of suffering.
