In the past the musculosceletal medicine did not pay much attention to the treatment to the muscular dysfunction of children, although they are affected by nociceptive pain as frequently as the adults are. It is not understandable that neurological syndromes in general are neither a field of musculosceletal medicine, because they normally are accompanied by secondary muscular dysfunctions too. Muscles are sense organs contributing to the proprioception, which is the base of movements and posture. Rigidity, soft contractures, tonus disorders of the motoric system and the autonomous, trigger points and disturbances of the myofascial viscoelasticity are components of the apparent neurological picture as well as of pain syndromes and skeletal deformities of the growing child. These principally reversible symptoms are treatable with different methods of manual medicine suitable for children. An overview of the muscular dysfunction and the different treatment methods is given. The muscular dysfunction is only one symptom among many others and the treatment regularly has to be composed of different approaches to obtain long lasting results. Some examples of the outcome of manual therapy alone and a therapy composed of manual medicine and physiotherapy are described for the treatment of asymmetric babies, headache, idiopathic scoliosis and cerebral palsy.
