Introduction: Children with nursing bottle syndrome and long standing teeth destructions and no treatment so far were examined for accompanying pathological changes in the bacterial flora of the mouth and alterations due to chronic inflammation of the oral mucosa and the alveolar jawbone. Methods: In the years between 1993 and 1996, out of 200 annual patients with nurse bottle syndrome four were selected because of their extreme condition. Besides caries diagnosis and clinical documentation, microbiological and histopathological examinations were carried out. Results: Diagnosis and therapy of cases of giant cell reparative granuloma, oral candida infection, actinomycotic bone sequestration and displaced eruption of permanent maxillary incisors due to the persistance of suppurated temporary teeth are presented. Conclusions: These examples of serious complications of the nursing bottle syndrome demonstrate that it is still urgently necessary to inform parents about the disease and its consequences, but mainly its prevention by dental care.
