Uit diverse onderzoeken komt naar voren dat cognitieve gedragstherapie en interpersoonlijke psychotherapie even effectief zijn in de behandeling van depressie. Hoe is deze overeenkomstige effectiviteit te verklaren? De behandelingen verschillen duidelijk in de uitvoering en alleen sommige patiëntkenmerken leiden tot differentiële behandeleffecten. Uit een vergelijking van de bestaande effectstudies blijkt dat patiënt- en therapeutfactoren die positief bijdragen aan de therapeutische alliantie, bij beide therapieën samenhangen met het behandelresultaat.
