Zu den primären Aufgaben des Zahnarztes zählt die Diagnose der Zahnkaries, die im zahnärztlichen Alltag immer wieder eine Herausforderung darstellen kann. Die visuelle Beurteilung der Zahnoberflächen ist das gängigste Verfahren der zahnärztlichen Untersuchung und findet in der Regel zuerst statt, bevor weitere diagnostische Mittel eingesetzt werden. Neben der visuellen Kariesdiagnostik stehen dem Zahnarzt mittlerweile zahlreiche Verfahren zur Verfügung, die für die Befundung und Diagnosestellung der Zahnkaries geeignet scheinen. Hierzu zählen u. a. Fluoreszenzverfahren und die elektrische Widerstandsmessung. Die moderne Zahnheilkunde verfügt über gut etablierte präventive und minimal-invasive Interventionsmöglichkeiten, die es erlauben, bereits frühe Läsionen mit geeigneten Verfahren zu versorgen. Daher ist es für ein diagnostisches Verfahren entscheidend, neben Dentinkaries auch initiale Läsionen frühzeitig erfassen zu können.
