Summary: The subject of credibility theory is the optimal prediction of a non-observable random variable by an affine-linear combination of observable random variables; in general, the optimality criterion is based on the expected squared prediction error. Credibility theory has been developed in actuarial mathematics: In its origin, it is part of experience rating, which aims at tariffication on the basis of observable claims experience, but there is also a variety of models for experience reserving, which aims at reserving for claims which have occurred but are not yet reported or which have been reported but are not yet settled. In the present paper we develop the foundations of credibility theory and a general credibility model which yields explicit formulas for the credibility predictor and for the expected squared prediciton error and which contains as special cases many of the credibility models for tariffication and reserving considered in the literature.
