Unter dem Namen „Stuttgart 21“, einem Verkehrs- und Städtebauprojekt zur Neuordnung des Eisenbahnknotens, entfachte sich im Herbst 2010 eine Kontroverse über Kosten, Nutzen und Modalitäten bei der Planung und Durchführung von Groβprojekten moderner Technik und Infrastruktur. Bis zum Schlichtungsverfahren Ende November bis Mitte Dezember 2010 demonstrierten nahezu jede Woche bis zu 70.000 Bürgerinnen und Bürger gegen den geplanten und bereits genehmigten Umbau des Stuttgarter Hauptbahnhofs. Es gab vereinzelt Demonstrationen von Befürwortern dieses Projekts.
