Mikroskopische Untersuchungsverfahren erschließen uns den Gefügebau der Werkstoffe, und zwar in dem Sinn, dass Heterogenitäten – typisch in Größenordnungen von 1 bis 100 mm – sichtbar gemacht und nach Aussehen, Form und chemischer Zusammensetzung quantitativ bestimmt werden können (Kap. 3). Über den atomaren Aufbau der Stoffe – im Bereich von 0,1 bis 1 nm – machen diese Verfahren jedoch keine Aussage. Auch unser Schulwissen sagt meist nur, dass Materie aus Atomen besteht, kaum aber, wie diese angeordnet sind.
