The announcement of a serious disease to an expatriate patient in China is a difficult duty for the chief physician of the French Embassy. This article reports from field experience on the difficulties that the physician faces when he must inform the patient of a possible diagnosis of a serious disease, as well as the confirmation of the disease and the treatments available in this case of expatriation. First, the author studies the case in question as to whether the patient should return to France to receive further testing for confirmation of a serious disease. Then he analyzes the results of the case announcement and available options that would best care for the patient’s needs. He then defines the characteristics of what a serious disease entails. Finally, the author expounds therapeutic options available in China to treat a serious disease and relevant customary practices in the Chinese health care system.
