Die im Traktionsbereich immer häufiger eingesetzten Generatoren und Motoren mit Permanentmagneterregung unterliegen besonderen Rahmenbedingungen hinsichtlich ihres Drehzahl- und Leistungsbereiches sowie anderen traktionsspezifischen Anforderungen wie gesteigerter Momentendichte und hohen Stoßbeschleunigungen. Die nicht vernachlässigbare Temperaturabhängigkeit der Magnete und in Folge die Änderung der induzierten Spannung bzw. des Drehmoments sind ebenso zu beachten wie die zusätzlichen Verluste durch die Permanentmagnete und durch den Betrieb am Stromrichter. Des Weiteren werden die Nutzung des Reluktanzmoments, die Anwendung der Feldschwächung und die parasitären Effekte bei Permanentmagnet-Traktionsmaschinen in diesem Aufsatz behandelt.
