Auf Reisen drohen als diabetesspezifische Komplikationen akute Stoffwechselentgleisungen und eine erhöhte Infektionsgefahr. Komplikationen durch mit dem Diabetes in Zusammenhang stehende Erkrankungen können sich durch den Stress einer Reise verstärken oder auch erstmals auftreten. Vor allem Schulungen des Patienten und auch der Angehörigen zum Diabetes, der Hypoglykämiewahrnehmung, den Folgeerkrankungen und der Selbstkontrolle können viele der Komplikationen vermeiden helfen. Klima, Zeitverschiebung, veränderte Tagesabläufe und Freizeitverhalten mit ungewohnten und vermehrten körperlichen Aktivitäten, aber auch Stresssituationen gefährden den Diabetespatienten. Daneben können Probleme bei der richtigen Insulindosierung auftreten. Flüssigkeitsverlust (Gefahr einer eingeschränkten Nierenfunktion) oder auch veränderte Ernährungsgewohnheiten müssen berücksichtigt werden. Weiterhin sind hygienische Faktoren, die medizinische Versorgung am Urlaubsort und der Umgang mit einem anderen Keimspektrum bei der Urlaubsplanung zu bedenken.
