Unfallbedingte Verletzungen, meist als Folge eines Verkehrsunfalls, sind die bedeutendste ernste Gesundheitsstörung und häufigste Todesursache im Kindes- und frühen Jugendalter. Häufig handelt es sich um Verletzungen mehrerer Organe bzw. Körperregionen im Sinne eines Polytraumas. Je jünger polytraumatisierte Kinder sind, desto deutlicher treten Unterschiede zum Erwachsenen aufgrund anatomischer und physiologischer Besonderheiten, insbesondere was die Skelettentwicklung anbelangt, im Verletzungsmuster auf. Inadäquate Primärbeurteilung und Behandlungsstrategien können für frühe Todesfälle beim kindlichen Polytrauma verantwortlich sein [29]. Um die häufigsten Verletzungen aufzuzeigen und die sich hieraus ergebenden Behandlungskonzepte zu diskutieren, untersuchten wir in dieser Studie retrospektiv die Unfallmechanismen, Verletzungsmuster, Behandlungsstrategien und das Outcome der in der Universitätsklinik des Saarlandes von 1990 bis 1999 behandelten polytraumatisierten Kinder sowie der polytraumatisierten Kinder, die in den Jahren 2001 und 2002 an der Universitätsklinik in Frankfurt am Main behandelt wurden.
