Epilepsiezentren werden als überregionale Kompetenzzentren definiert, die über spezielle Expertise und eine besondere Ausstattung zur ambulanten und zur stationären Versorgung von Patienten mit Epilepsien und verwandten Erkrankungen verfügen. Die Kernaufgaben umfassen neben der Diagnostik und Therapie auch Aspekte der Weiterbildung beteiligter Berufsgruppen sowie der Schulung von Patienten und Laien. Spezielle Anforderungen beziehen sich auf institutionelle, personelle und apparative Ebenen. Epilepsiezentren können sich Schwerpunkte geben, die z. B. die Epilepsiechirurgie oder die Betreuung mehrfach behinderter Menschen betreffen. Ferner kann die Spezialisierung auf Ebene verschiedener Altersgruppen erfolgen (Kinder, Jugendliche und Erwachsene). In dem vorliegenden Beitrag werden die besonderen Anforderungen an Epilepsiezentren für Kinder und Jugendliche v. a. mit dem Schwerpunkt der Epilepsiechirurgie diskutiert.
