Die arteriosklerotische Verschlusserkrankung der Extremitäten ist eine häufige Komplikation der generalisierten Arteriosklerose. Sie führt zur Einschränkung der Lebensqualität durch Begrenzung der Gehfähigkeit und bei Fortschreiten der Erkrankung v. a. bei Diabetikern zur Amputation. Ziel der konservativen Therapie ist einerseits die symptomatische Beeinflussung der eingeschränkten Gehstrecke durch physikalische und pharmakologische Maßnahmen. Andererseits soll durch Modifikation der die Arteriosklerose begünstigenden Risikofaktoren das Fortschreiten der Grunderkrankung mit Verlust der Extremität sowie kardialen und zerebralen Komplikationen vorgebeugt werden.
