Der elektronische Unterstützung von Verkaufsprozessen (‚E-Commerce’) hat in den vergangenen Jahren stark an Bedeutung gewonnen, auch wenn bisher insgesamt nur ein relativ geringer Teil der möglichen Transaktionen über das Internet stattfinden. Bei gerade einmal 10% der Unternehmen sind überhaupt Einkaufstransaktionen über Internet-Seiten möglich [Alt/Zbornik 2000, 89]. Ein bekanntes Beispiel dafür ist der Karstadt-Quelle-Konzern, der als ein Vorreiter beim E-Business im deutschsprachigen Raum gilt. Im Jahr 2000 verbuchte das Handelsunternehmen Online-Bestellungen im Wert von EUR 450 Millionen. Dies entsprach rund 9% des reinen Versandumsatzes [Computerwoche 2001c]. Im Jahr 2001 stieg der Online-Umsatz dann auf über EUR 800 Millionen, was mehr als 10% Gesamteinnahmen ausmachte (EUR 7,7 Milliarden in 2001) [Computerwoche 2002]. Insgesamt erzielte der Handel in Deutschland im Jahr 2000 einen Umsatz von rund EUR 1 Billion, davon EUR 323 Milliarden im Grosshandel, EUR 617 Milliarden im Handel mit Kraftfahrzeugen und rund EUR 121 Milliarden an Tankstellen.
