Die Bevölkerungsentwicklung in Deutschland einerseits und die längere Verweildauer eigener Zähne im Patientenmund andererseits werden zu einem erhöhten zahnärztlichen Therapiebedarf bei älteren Menschen führen. Ältere Patienten sind oft durch direkte Folgen des Alterns, eine erhöhte Anzahl von Allgemeinerkrankungen und eine entsprechende Pharmakotherapie gekennzeichnet (Multimedikation). Die zahnärztliche Therapie ist per se komplikationsträchtiger als bei jungen Patienten. Zur Komplikationsprophylaxe ist die Kenntnis allgemeinmedizinischer und pharmakologischer Aspekte erforderlich, um adäquate Maßnahmen vor, während und nach der Therapie ergreifen zu können. Besondere Beachtung findet die spezielle zahnärztliche Pharmakotherapie. Dieser Fortbildungsartikel zeigt grundlegende Kenntnisse zur zahnärztlichen Behandlung älterer Patienten auf.
