Gliomatosis peritonei (GP) is the implantation of neural tissue in the peritoneum. This rare condition is associated with ovarian teratoma and is often identified at primary or secondary surgery. Between 1985 and 2011, ten patients having ovarian teratoma with GP were treated at our institution. Their data were retrospectively reviewed from medical records. GP was identified during primary surgery in eight cases and during tertiary surgery in the other two cases. The patients’ median age was 23 years (range 17–37 years), and the median primary tumour size was 17.5 cm (range 12–24 cm). The cases included seven immature teratomas (1 grade 1, 3 grade 2 and 3 grade 3) and three mature teratomas. Fertility-sparing surgery was performed in all patients. Platinum-based chemotherapy was administered to four patients. Growing tumour was observed in four patients. In these cases, no recurrence was observed after surgery for growing teratoma syndrome (GTS). No adverse events have been reported in the patients with residual mature GP. A favourable outcome for patients with residual mature GP is expected.
