The atmospheric distribution of CO2 and the related sink and source processes, over the oceans as well as over the continents are still not well understood (Falkowski et al., 2000). The main focus within carbon cycle research has moved from the global scale down to more regional scales, in order to obtain both a better scientific understanding of the important processes and in order to meet the requirements by the international policy community (Tans and Wallace, 1999). Mesoscale transport models with a high spatiotemporal resolution are important tools for this purpose.
