Die Chemoprävention in der Onkologie ist der interdisziplinäre Versuch aus der Datenlage zur Epidemiologie, der molekularen Pharmakologie und den Modellen zur Karzinogenese, Substanzgruppen und Einzelstoffe zu charakterisieren, die mit den Schritten der Karzinogenese auf molekularer Ebene so interagieren, dass Zelltransformationen und/oder das Auftreten bösartiger Zellen mit einem Metastasenpotenzial weitgehend eingeschränkt oder zeitlich verzögert werden. Über etablierte Screeningverfahren können Stoffe als chemopräventiv definiert und in klinischen Studien auf ihre Wirksamkeit geprüft werden, ob sie die Krebsmorbidität und Mortalität senken können.
Bisher gibt es noch kein behördlich registriertes und zugelassenes Medikament für die Indikation: “Chemoprävention des Krebs”; Ergebnisse aus laufenden klinischen Studien sind in den nächsten Jahren zu erwarten. Dennoch kann jeder Bürger heute schon gesundheitspräventiv für sich handeln, wenn er den Ernährungsempfehlungen der Deutschen Krebsgesellschaft, täglich Obst und Gemüse in den Ampelfarben und ballastreiche Kost in seinen Speiseplan aufzunehmen, folgt. Es wird zugleich die Frage diskutiert, wo der Stellenwert von sog. Nahrungsergänzungen in Form von Kapseln, Tabletten oder Trinkampullen liegt.
