Eine allgemeine nichtlineare Gleichung kann in der Gestalt (14.1) (14.1) $$F(x) = \varphi (x)$$ geschrieben werden, wobei F und φ Operatoren von einem Banachraum X in einen (möglicherweise anderen) Banachraum Y sind. Wir haben schon zahlreiche Beispiele solcher Gleichungen kennengelernt, meist in der Gestalt, dass X = Y und entweder φ (x) = θ oder F = I der identische Operator ist: Im zweiten Fall sind die Lösungen der Gleichung (14.1) gerade die Fixpunkte von φ. Aus dem Fixpunktsatz von Schauder wissen wir, dass diese Gleichung im Fall F = I eine Lösung besitzt, wenn φ kompakt ist und gewisse Wachstumsbedingungen erfüllt (siehe etwa Lemma 12.2). Operatoren F mit dieser Eigenschaft wollen wir in diesem Kapitel genauer unter die Lupe nehmen.
