Fr die starke Zunahme von Infektionen durch opportunistische Pilze sind vor allem prdisponierende Faktoren verantwortlich, welche die natrliche Abwehr des Wirtes abschwchen. Trotzdem mssen pathogene Pilze, wie die medizinisch bedeutende Hefe Candida albicans, ber Virulenzfaktoren verfgen, die dem Mikroorganismus das berleben auf und in einem Wirt sichern oder das Vordringen zu tieferen Geweben und Organen ermglichen. Das Ziel der Forschungsprojekte der Nachwuchsgruppe Pathogenittsfaktoren bei Pilzinfektionen am Robert Koch-Institut (RKI) ist, solche Faktoren von Pilzen zu identifizieren und zu analysieren, von denen vermutet wird, dass sie bei einer Infektion eine wichtige Rolle spielen. Damit sollen nicht nur die Pathogenittsmechanismen besser verstanden werden, sondern auch Ansatzpunkte fr neue Medikamente gefunden werden. Schlielich gilt es, aufgrund der zunehmenden Resistenzen gegenber den wenigen zur Verfgung stehenden Antimykotika, die Wirkungsweise existierender Medikamente zu verstehen.
