Die vielfältigen Therapiemöglichkeiten in der Urologie, insbesondere in der urologischen Onkologie, machen eine differenzierte uropathologische Diagnostik notwendig. Das Einhalten von Standards ist hilfreich, um eine möglichst hohe Qualität der Diagnosen zu erreichen. Die derzeit von Seiten der Pathologie vorhandenen Leitlinien und weitere Regelwerke (z. B. European Guidelines) sollen dargestellt und Anforderungen an die Standards und die Qualität erläutert werden. Anwendungsleitlinien im Sinne von Vorgaben für ein standardisiertes Vorgehen existieren für Tumoren der Prostata, des Hodens, der Nieren und der ableitenden Harnwege eingeschlossen Harnblase.
