Die vorliegenden Familienuntersuchungen zur Schizophrenie zeigen übereinstimmend, dass Schizophrenien familiär gehäuft auftreten. Dabei stimmen die Wiederholungsziffern für Verwandte unterschiedlichen Grades nach Korrektur von der durch die Rekrutierung bedingten Auslesefehlern weitgehend überein. Generell nimmt die Erkrankungswahrscheinlichkeit mit der genetischen Entfernung zu einem erkrankten Indexpatienten systematisch ab und steigt mit zunehmender genetischer Belastung an. Die Befunde aus Familienuntersuchungen weisen somit auf die Bedeutung genetischer Faktoren für schizophrene Psychosen hin. Aus der Beobachtung familiärer Häufung lässt sich eine genetische Verursachung aber nicht zweifelsfrei ableiten. Vielmehr kann die Transmission eines Merkmals entlang von Familienstammbäumen auch in ähnlichen physikalischen und psychosozialen Umwelten, übereinstimmenden Erfahrungen oder fortgeschriebenen familiären Kommunikationsstilen begründet sein. Eine Erklärung für die familiäre Häufung schizophrener Psychosen konnte durch Zwillingsstudien erreicht werden.
