Dem Radiologen steht heute ein großes Arsenal von Untersuchungsverfahren bei der Diagnostik von Knochengeschwülsten und geschwulstähnlichen Läsionen zur Verfügung, das er gezielt einsetzen sollte, um in der präbioptischen Phase die Diagnose der Geschwulstart sicher zu stellen oder ihr zumindest sehr nahe zu kommen. In Anbetracht der Schwierigkeiten, die die Histologie vieler Knochentumorentitäten bereiten kann, genügt es nicht, den pathologischen Prozess als solchen in einer bestimmten topographischen Region zu konstatieren, vielmehr sollte eine artdiagnostische Aussage unter Angabe der Wahrscheinlichkeit gemacht werden, z. B. „typisches Chondrosarkom bei klassischer Symptomatik“; „wahrscheinlich Chondrosarkom bei typischer Röntgenphänomenologie, aber atypischem Sitz“; „für keine der bekannten Tumorentitäten typisches Bild, von der Röntgenphänomenologie her jedoch sehr aggressiver, malignomverdächtiger Prozess“. Auf die dringende Notwendigkeit, dass sich der Röntgenuntersucher diagnostisch mit konkreten Angaben festlegt, wird in Kap. 16 („Möglichkeiten und Gefahren von Fehlinterpretationen“) näher eingegangen.
